| I will still be using the old tried and true coil springs and doulble long spring 11's. I dont have the concerns most do with dogs. I just cant stand the thought of not being able to take a mink, bobcat, or fox in them as i can with my coil spring traps or the 11's. Now if i trapped residential areas this would be a serious consideration but its not for me. So i will stick with what has worked for me.

| Tony, My raccoon trapping, up until now, was split up between water sets using my trusty #1-1/2 coil springs and on land using the #220's in blind trail sets. I never caught a dog in a #220 in 35 years of using them. I am very traditional and old fashioned, but when my dream machine #220 was thugged for land use, I opted for the best alternative. I have occasionally used coil springs at dirt hole sets on land for raccoon in the past, but found them far more time consuming than plopping a #220 in a trail for them. With the coil spring usage on land targeted for raccoon, skunk and opossum incidentals were quite common. Very rarely would I catch a non-target in the #220's. The DP traps seem to be my best option to fill the void under my circumstances. I am counting on a low level of incidental catches with them by using a "sweet" bait instead of a prepared bait using fish or meat stock. It will be an interesting trip in the reveal of trying something alien and new to my old ways. Jonathan |

| I intend to add more DP traps to my collection of traps every year. I have a few dozen now and find places to set them all. I can't afford the lil' griz traps where I trap with all the thieves but I use Yancy's DP traps. They work just as well for $100/dozen less. Heres some info on them for those not familiar... Using DP traps... They are a bit slower than the Griz traps but preformed just as well for me. Here's one set and ready to catch coons... ![]() Here's a few of them in action as well... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some info on them... You get One Dozen, [12] dogproof traps, with 1 setter, 24 end plates, one cork, These traps have been in storage since 1992, when all but cushion catch traps were banned in California, This trap works like a dirt hole set, only this trap is your dirt hole, when the coon takes the bait, the trap catches the front foot between the toes and wrist every time, that will keep your coon loss very low, no more chew outs or toe catches, If you are a coon trapper this trap will put $$ in your pocket, There is something about a hole in the ground that a coon can not pass up, The coon must pull the trigger up to trip the trap, You must have a setter to set all of your DP traps. and one is included with the Doz traps. Bury the trap in a bank, It also makes the trap look like a crawdad hole, This is a very productive set, Very few coon will pass it up. Believe me a coon is not a bit bashful about putting his foot in a hole, You can set these traps on top of the ground with a u bolt, or a nail on each side to hold it in place, traps had a bit of surface rust, but have been glass beaded and Painted a grey metal primer, but will not interfere with the operation of the trap. all the springs and locking devices are inside the box, so you can bury this trap for a dirthole Note The price is $135, Plus $15 shipping in the US. Try clicking the video link below, it should help you figure them out. ![]() Stacy Yancy sells them. You can PM him here for more info. on them and how to buy them... click here Tell him I sent ya. lol ~ADC~ Last edited by ADC; 08-23-2008 at 12:08 PM. |

| The nice thing besides being dog proof is that most varities can be baited and set at home. I have a lot different varietys of DP traps to include the "Black Hole" which i do bait at home but set on site. I believe the most important point ADC has shown/brought up is to anchor the trap down so as the coon pulls up on the trigger the trap is firmly in place. ADC have you noticed the size of your coon go down earlier in the season??? Jonathan, I tried setting them in trails, in place of 220's. It worked some times and others they walked litterly right over the trap. I use all my traps so they get a work out through out the year. Hope to do more DP testing this year. But will use more grey pipe and coil springs, the video convienced me that if nothing else I may have them quicker. Tom

| We lost our conis and kill traps a long time ago. But i will still use the coil springs for the extra chance of catching a curious fox or otter. with the DP's you dont get that option but they would be great around homes and barns. I am in no way saying they dont work because they do. I traded and sold all the grizzes i had. Just wanted to keep the possibility that a fox or otter will still be caught while setting pocket sets for coon. And in corn fields fox are the extra benefit to the coil springs. And if using grizzes or any of the DP's that option is out for the most part. It will be hard to replace the coil spring traps on my line. I just never saw a advantage to using the DP's over coils. I still caught more coon in the coils and along with the extra benefits. It just wasnt enough for me to continue using them. But if around a residential area i can see a multitude of benefits but i have so many cage traps that i still dont need them. Call me old fashion. Just like my coils.

| Tony, understand exactly where you are coming from, but a lot of trappers will be going after coon on ground that the owners do not allow foot holds, for what ever reason. Then the DP's, to include cage traps will be their only option. I have one farm like that now, they lease it to bird hunters. If not for the DP's I would not be able to harvest the fur. Tom

| Those types of ares i try and steer clear of do to theft. But the DP,s will open up areas for you thats for sure. But for me its not a concern. The ADC trappers i am sure are really elated with them.

| "ADC have you noticed the size of your coon go down earlier in the season???" Not alot, but I set them well away from water. I see more small coons near water early on. I think too there are simply more small coons around early on that haven't been caught yet. lol Here in Iowa we have permission to trap the road ditches but with-in 200 yards of a house you must have permission from the land owner to set a snare or body gripper. It seems we had to pass up a plethera of coon trails that were 100 yards down the road, but no more. Toss in a DP trap and on down the road. Way faster than a foot trap and more selective so you don't catch the farmers dog. ~ADC~ |
