Check real close for coon sign as they flip them more frequently then cats. I did have both a coon and cat visiting a set last year with very little sign available. I moved the trap about 4 inches more outward from the hole and picked up a nice tom bobcat a couple days later. I got the coon in a set close by. Also I bedded inside the jaws as well as outside to insure all was tight. Hope this helps. Tom

Will give it a try tonight. I am in the 3rd night/morning of fliped sprung traps on this set. As it is where I am at there is not as much water as there is up there we are for the most part set up in the wide open. I have see a lot of guys use a baited tunel/hole with the trap twards the back. Our coytoes are so plentiful you for the most part can find a dep every 100sq yard. everything from the cats to the coons seem to travel the path most taken wether it be a road rut or cattle trail. Any suggestion for open ground trap set up?

I read on one of you other post about the force of a trap on an animal. Needless to say it does go numb for a while on the human finger and throbs for a considerable length of time. I did not have time to rerun this set this morning and will have to wait for PM. I did wind up recessing from ground level about 10" and then building up the out side of the hole with misc limbs. I created a place for them to stand and reach in. Hopefully they will not tear the pile apart. before reaching into the hole.

Tex, what critter are you trying to get? I prefer the animal stepping down not up so hope that is what you end up with. If the ground is frozen an axe works great for digging the bed...Tom

Working on Cats. Placement is on flat ground. I have dug an elongated slot for the trap to set down in appx 8" depth. I have bridged the top of it with branches and stick appx6" above ground level leaving a obvious paw hole to reach down in to after the bait. Do not have to worry about freezing ground just dry hard ground. I will have to up load pics over the weekend and show you what I am doing. I am up for any suggestions. They have stop springing the though.

The first picture iswhat the exposed cat set looks like in a trail set. The second picture is a covered set with a dirt hole added in a trail set. Hope this helps. Let us know if you needed any additional information. Tom

Tom, Those look good. Still learning how to trap semi-exclusively for cat. The coons were at it last night. I also think that my #1 blakes are probably a little to small for a cat. I was under the impresion that they were okay for coons though. The jaw width on the ones that i am using is about 4.5". Is there a particular bait cats like? What about the scent lures?

I would use at least a number 2 and preferably a number 3 for cats. They have a fairly large pad. They can and are taken in smaller traps so that is just my preference. I might recommend some of Asa Lennon's Bobcat Super All-Call...I feel it is one of the better ones on the market again just my thoughts on it. If you can get fresh bobcat urine and a little skunk juice you can get cats....Tom

I've been trying to catch coyotes and foxes but no luck at all. I'm a very new trapper and just got into the leg-hold traps. And traps4kids.com did'nt help me very much ether.

You should try catching coons near old building, right now it will be slow but if they are there they will be easier than yote's. Though I do not know how hard a fox is to catch, are they about as hard as a coon or a coyote Tom.

I'm in Tennessee and I'm 12 years old, I've caught many raccoons in a live trap before. But know I'm tryin to catch some coyotes and foxes in steel traps. Right know I've ordered #3cs Dukes for the coyotes, Would #3 be too big for fox? And I'm having problems with scent. How do I cover my scent?

Katie.

RW3, the number 3 is probably to big for foxes, It may cause some leg damage. It will however work for coyotes.
You scent will never be totally avoidable, so just be aware of where you leave scent and how much, the critters will know you have been there. You are on their home ground. Wear clean gloves when handling your traps and trapping gear. I would also recommend you revisit trap4kids as they cover everything you will need to know to get started. We will help you here but it is already posted with pictures there. Then come back here to fine tune your requirements or just to ask opinons....Tom
