| If there is anyone who would like to discuss basic trap sets or is having a problem with a specific target species. Let have the discussion here. ![]() Here is a basic dirt hole set for cats, coon, fox, and some coyotes even fall for it. The hole is very shallow at this set as the ground was frozen so I used and axe to chop a space under the log. The trap bed was also chopped out and dry dirt placed in the hole. The trap, in this case was a nr3 coil spring which was double staked under the trap. A single layer of wax paper covered the pan and a final covering of dry dirt was sifted over the set. Lets hear from some of you trappers of those of you who might want to learn. Tom

| Howdy, first you should have posted a set for someone else to learn LOL Please do that if you can. The bait I use is homemade. I also use some sort of attractor such as toiet paper or tinsel to get the cats attention. Again, even if you do not have pictures post a favorite set. Thanks, Tom

| Here's a picture of a basic blind trail set. Sorry I don't have a "before" picture, the set's a little torn up here. The trail was very well defined and ran along the edge of the concrete seen in the picture. The trap (1-1/2 coil spring) was placed underwater right near the edge of the land. I usually level out the mud with my boot for a nice solid trap bed. This set could easily be remade by redefining the trail with a few guide sticks. This is my favorite way to get coons, simple and effective. (click on the thumbnail for a larger picture) |

| Very nice Dave, do you take many mink in that set? It sure looks like a natural place for them. Nice coon, Thanks for the post, Tom

| Tom, I don't think we've taken any mink in that particular set, but we have taken some in similar sets. We only have our operation running for 3 days out of the season, so given enough time, it could connect with a mink. We also have success with mink in baited pocket sets. A baited pocket is a hole dug into the bank a the waterline, about 10-12 inches back into the bank. A piece of bait, such as a piece of fish is placed in the back of the hole, out of the water, and a 1-1/2 coil spring is set in front of the hole. Guide sticks are used to prevent the animal from reaching into the hole from the bank and to guide it in over the trap. The mink in the picture was caught in a baited pocket set we had set for coon. Pocket sets are useful where there is strong coon sign, but no concentrated trail that would be good for a blind trail set. A strong sweet-smelling lure can also be used to draw in coons from farther away. The lure was placed on the grass above the pocket. A long, narrow tile spade works well for digging pockets. -Dave |

| Very nice Dave, hope all that are viewing will take the time to post. Here is another frozen ground set, It is refered to as a flat set, ![]() As the ground was frozen I piled some dead tree limbs over a slight depression, I placed some bait in the low spot and hung an attractor from one of the branches. If you look in the corner of the catch circle you can see where he was walking when he got wind of the set or seen the attractor. As you can see he made the depression deeper and scattered the limbs. | I dont have a name for this set, Its a cross between a flat set and a blind set in a cow trail. I punch in 2 wobble holes in the edge of the trail with a rebar about 12'' apart. bed my trap in the trail at a 45 degree angle. I bait one hole and lure the other, I then place a small cow chip between the holes with a few drops of coyote urine on it. Most of the ground I trap has a very low deer population so I dont have much problem with snapped traps. |
