The holes I make are 2to3 inches and wobbled out, I then place cotton or sheeps wool in the hole for a lure holder the configuration of this set is in a triangle with holes on the edge of the cow trail. This set is very simple and quick to make, and very effective on all furbearing animals. If you can go to Broken Bow to the fur Harvesters convention on the 5th or 6th of Oct. and watch one of Mark June's Demos, then take what you learn and build on it.

Good advice, go to the convention in Broken Bow there will be trapping demonstrations all day long for both days. Additionally, the NAFA representive will be giving skinning/fleshing/ and streching demonstrations. That plus the ability to purchase supplies ( with no shipping costs) and meeting trappers from around the state and near by states. Demos start at 08:00 AM each day. Tom

anyone on here ever use bucket sets with body grips for coons. Im going to use a sweet bait with coon lure (no meat or fish) on privet ground. I hope this will help keep the coons and Clampett rats out of my cat sets. any pointers would be helpful.

Tom Miranda showed that double hole set on his video's, it is based on a goverment study that showed using one dirt hole and two traps would increase your percentage of catches. Not sure if Miranda developed the double dirt hole and one trap would increase your catch or if he just showed it on his trapping videos. But in any case it does work very well. Especially on K9's, Coyote and Fox. I have caught dryland coon with this set also. I think that they move their feet around while checking the scents coming from each hole.
This badger was taken using the double dirt hole set...

Best of Luck. Tom

Slingshot, I am getting away from buckets and switching to wood boxes. They seem to be more effective to me and easier to conceal. If you leave the front half of the bottom off and put a 1/2 inch wire backing on, you will see a marked improvement on your catch. I got this idea from a video and it works. the boxes should be 9 inches on a side, 24 inches long. Cut notches for the springs about 3 inches deep. Place a log, or something heavy on top so they dont flip it over on you. There are a couple other little tricks to use also, but that should get you started. Tom

thanks tom, I bought some buckets up at the convention to try, Ive got them ready to go. After this season is over I will make some boxes, I would think a weatherd box would work much better than a brite white bucket. Were down to days now. If all gos as planed I should be skinning coyotes a week from today.

You are more than welcome, I have a lot of buckets I used but they are going to be used to hold traps etc from now on. I am in the process of making some boxes now, as I feel the bigger coons will hit them as the weather gets colder. Best of luck. Tom

When you have a live animal how do you "expire" them? I personnaly would rather see an instant kill like the set up you had on the first picture of the bobcat. I am NOT saying trapping is bad, this is truly the best way to cut down on these predators. I myself am hoping to take a fox, coyote or bobcat, but I will use a bow. I wouldnt mind going out and trappin-I have never done it before.

I don't discuss how in detail how I put the animal down. But I will tell you it is always in the most humane method available. Each aniamal is handled based on the set and location. Where are you located? I may be able to help you find someone to take you along if you so desire. Tom

P.S. and I do not recommend the bow unless you are hunting the animal. Not as a method of dispatching a trapped animal.

It seem there is some intrest here about trapping and the working trap line by some folks that have not had a chance to spend time on a trap line. my thought is this if there was enough intrest maybe we could put on a trapper education day.NOT a bunch of demos but hands on for those that want to learn. Huntress its called dispatch and there are some top flight female trappers(Donna June , Lorie Gappa). Im sure that ne fur harvester would give us there support on this. Kevin

Well finally got 11 sets out, been busy skinning the coon and skunk my patners has been bringing in and the road kills we have been getting. Only have 3 skunks and two coon to flesh now so took some time to make a few to hold me over till we hit it full bore in a couple days. Hope to have some pictures tonight. Take your camera folks, lets get the Member Photo Gallery going as well as post some here in the trapping section. Be careful out on the line. Tom

If you are going to do a class I am interested and am sure I could get something started for you-like a beyond BOW class if that is something you would like to pursue.

I was talking with Phil Vanbibber, owner of Prairie Creek Fur Buyers and supples. He also wants to hold a demonstration for the new and old trappers alike.

This will be after trapping season of course, but I will see what we can put together.

Does, Grand Island or Kearney sound like a central location to you folks. Kind of in the middle of the state and both sites are just off the interstate.

Just some things to start thinking about. Tom
