    Smile Pheasant Chicks Arrival!

Our chicks arrived from South Dakota. New Genetics for our hunting and releasing stocks. The black chicks that look like little penguins are from Wisconsin. They are Melanistic Mutant chicks. We usually have about 300 per room and that is what you see in these pictures. They started flying about 5 days from this point. Our Dogs and the children of our freinds enjoy watching them scurry around. If you would like to come and bring your children for their arrival next year or even just come and see the farm this year.....drop me an email. Enjoy the pics!

Melanistic Mutants. A blue/black melanisim trait that showed up in or around england in the 1880's. That is the first documented case anyway. Found and bred for strength and intensity by Lord Rothschild. When bred to ringnecks today the offspring will be half true ringneck looking and half MM. Subsequent offspring of 2nd generation may still show MM traits, but, the ringneck gene ultimaltely takes over.
Many people here think the ringneck is THE pheasant, though there are many different variations of the pheasant. (google bohemian blackneck, Japanese Green Pheasant, Afghan Whitewing)The middle eastern blackneck family, one of the most beautiful in my opinion, is slowly being bred out by the ringneck by people who have brought them there for hunting stock.

I love the ringneck but across the oceans some consider it a "trash bird" because of their aggressive genetics.

Geez....you just asked about the black and yellow chicks.....sorry......melanistic mutants.

    Knee Jerk........

Thanks......I think that they think they have their collars on. It wasn't so pretty the first year we tried the let the brown dog watch. She swallowed one in about .01 seconds.

Funny to me.....not to my wife Corryn. High pitched decibles came from Corryns mouth when the dog swallowed.
