Cool More Deer

I wish we could get more deer here and also get a longer season. In Texas the season is much longer and you can get upwards of 6 deer on one tag. I will let Coach tell us how many you can get and how long the season is but it's a really nice setup wish we had the same setup.

Default More Deer?

What are you talking about more deer? you can have a couple of the dozens that we have around my area. I hunt around Aurora and Central City area if anyone knows where that is, and we have more than enough deer. Almost too many as we get alot of them hit on the highway. I do agree with your comment on getttin more deer on one tag. I think a combo tag would be a good idea, for example buy a Buck tag and get a doe or 2 doe tag free. something like that would definitely be appreciated not only by hunters but also by the motorists that are hitting all of these deer around here. Anyone have any idea how we can bring this up to someone that can do something about it?

Mitch

Default From what I understand...

The only way they will even look at increasing the limits is if farmers complain about them snacking on all of their crops. At that time they decide what to do in that county. Good question for the NGPC.

Well Actually I just talked to NPG and they said you can get unlimited does but ya have to buy the permits. While this isn't the best option I think thats a start. I'm ok with getting between 1 and 2 bucks and as many Does as I can buy permits for.

Since Ice requested it. There is multiple counties that have different regulations ranging from 3 to 5 deer. The counties that I have hunted in are five deer counties, and are currently set up as 3 anterless tags and 2 anterless/buck tags. Meaning you can kill 5 does/0bucks, 4 does/1 buck, 3 does/2 bucks, its all up to you. The tags are good for the whole state, but you have to follow the rules for the county that you are hunting for that hunt. The hunting season starts in the first weekend in October for Archery and ends the last weekend of october. the first weekend in Nov. is the start of rifle season (where you can also use bows) and that goes untill mid January. Then in some counties, which mine is one of the counties, there is a one or two week season for spikes and does in late January after the regular season is over. You can also hunt turkey during the archery and rifle seasons with the legal firearms of the season. Then there is a spring turkey season which is a month long in the spring. You can kill 4 jakes/gobblers in both seasons combined. Any other questions ask, but I think that is about it.

My uncle moved here from Texas two years ago. He seemed to think that the size of the deer in Nebraska surpassed the average deer in Texas. The antler size was equal but the black tail deer usually weighed around 100 pounds. Is this correct?
Now the NGPC can allow predation permits to landowners if the deer are destroying your crops. Maybe you can help out some poor farmer and get your 500 pounds of deer meat.

No offense to anyone in Texas, but I'd hate to see Nebraska become like Texas as far as deer. We can already get as many does as you want. I just wish Nebraska would do more about access, that way we don't end up like Texas.

i thought blacktails were pretty much only found on the west coast. i may be wrong, but unless introduced on some ranches there arent blacktails in texas. as far as buck size, it goes for any animal, the colder the climate, the bigger the body. an average mature buck in texas is gonna be 150-160 pounds, in the midwest your looking at 220 lb+ mature bucks, if you go farther north into canada your looking at an average mature buck weighing over 300lbs

I think Obert is right. Now a lot of guys will let you hunt if you take them out to dinner or spend the weekend working their hay fields. Finding them is difficult at best.

If there was some way to certify yourself as a safe and sane hunter to a list of farmers/ranchers that have deer tearing up their crops you would have a marriage made in heaven. I have considered this referral system and I have never been able to figure out how to manage all of the details. I suppose you could do it like EBay and have hunters rated after the hunt and charge a fee to connect the parties.

Anybody want to start a new business with me?

That is a tradition I'd like to see continue. With all the leasing, poaching and stealing going on these days that may just completely whipe out hunting as we know it. I just as well head 20 miles and live in SD then.

I tell you what I've read over your post a few times duxrus and I think you'd have a great idea there for huntingne.com. What a great way to link hunters and land owners together. Charge a bare minimal just to cover the expense, such as phone calls etc. I mean bare minimal too. And keep it from becoming pay to hunt. I have seen this type of thing but that is linking landowners trying to get money with people who want to pay for land rights. Animal prositution.. We'd want to stay away from that. You've got a great idea though.
