I read this line and it made me think of this story. The proposed site is just north of Sioux City. New South Dakota Oil Refinery One Step Closer to Reality : Gas 2.0

It will be interesting to see how far they get with this.

The local people are already fighting this. Nobody wants one in their backyard. Not building refineries has much less to do with political parties than local objections.
One further point the current refineries have been updated so that more petroleum products are produced in the refineries than when they were first put on line. Lastly the President who signed into law outlawing drilling in the gulf coast was a Republican. At the beginning of this decade the Presidency and the Congress were both controlled by one party and it seems funny to blame the other party for not allowing drilling in ANWAR and the gulf when the majority could have passed legislation to do it. The then governor of Florida was opposed to allowing the offshore drilling near his states coast. Can you guess what party he was with and the family he belongs to?

My brother-in-law lives in Elk Point SD where this site is being proposed. He told me that the majority of the local people are not opposed to it. There are a few that do not want it, but they are the minority.

The people opposed to it from I've read are the landowners of the property they want to build on on those land owners neighbors. This thing has a long ways to go and the company that is proposing to build it needs to come up with the finances to build it. From what I read the Alberta tar sands are not the cleanest stuff around so this company may have a hard time passing the environmental air laws. Will be interesting.

Did anyone else catch the History channels New Mega disasters episode the other night? It was about refineries. I had no idea that refineries were potentially that dangerous.

Every square inch of the refinery is flammable. Has to be in the top 5 of the most hazardous jobs...

Anyone see the oil spill on the Mississippi today? Why don't some want there to be drilling in ANWR again?

Just because it's a barren wasteland in the Summer doesn't make it OK to ruin it with a little oil here and a little oil there. That's like the government finding a small town in Nevada and making it a dump for nuclear waste. Well nothing much happens there so that makes it ok to dump there.

I don't think so.

Know what the problem is? We are addicted to oil (obviously). Compare it to a cocaine addict if you will (ala John Stewart). If you are addicted to cocaine and your supplier starts to charge you too much for your cocaine, should you just find a different supplier that is cheaper or start making your own??? No. I know you think it's better if we start making our own but for how long? Until it gets too expensive to make our own and then what? We find another supplier? Instead of these oil companies spending billions drilling in ANWR, why don't they spend those resources elsewhere?

Yepper lets talk about it for another ten years.... Did you see also where those who spilled the oil are cleaning it up. That also is part of being responsible. As the price of oil goes up and down and the price of gas does the same, the users will complain, the producers will complain, those with other reasons will complain, and not one thing will be done to alleviate the problem...AGAIN. My apologies for feeling like 11.68 Billion dollars in profits is a bit excessive. Tax breaks are probably not needed if you can afford gigantic bonuses and payrolls for the douches in charge. But I forget, they need these huge profits to invest in alternative energy sources and small islands in the Pacific.

Were you crying for Big Oil in the early nineties, when oil was $30/barrel? Didn't think so. Big oil profits averaging 8%. Gee, that's highway robbery.

How much capital investment do you believe Exxon has in equipment, refineries, and research? Doesn't matter, eh?

Dems have been wishing, for years, for more expensive gasoline. That would make us like Europe, and force us to use more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Dems would have achieved this expensive gasoline via taxes. Go figure.

To answer your question, I was 15 in the early 90's. So you were correct to think I was not crying for big oil back then. Congratulations.
