Re: Cell Phones From the Weird Harold:
"LINCOLN — Starting next year, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles hopes to offer most drivers the option of renewing their licenses via the Internet.
Beverly Neth, department director, said Monday that the online alternative should be ready by late spring if all goes well. It could be delayed if federal regulations take effect requiring people to provide documents proving their identity.
Neth said "time will tell" whether the new system saves money or eases staffing shortages in the Douglas County driver's license exam stations, but she is optimistic about both.
The online option would be available to people ages 21 through 64 who are renewing their licenses. Younger drivers who are working their way through the state's graduated licensing system, as well as older drivers, still will have to appear in person at a driver's license exam station.
The same applies to people getting a license for the first time and people whose licenses have been expired for more than a year.
Neth said the online option became possible once all Nebraska drivers obtained digital licenses. That landmark was reached in June. Now, information and photos are stored electronically and can be used easily to produce the new cards.
Every 10 years, however, drivers will have to get their renewals in person so that a new digital photo can be taken, she said. Stored photos and signatures will be used for every other 5-year renewal.
Eye examinations would be performed at the in-person renewals every 10 years, unless a medical condition required more frequent checking, said Sara O'Rourke, driver's license exam administrator."

How will this impact overall driver skill levels? Certainly not for the better, in my opinion.
