I just read an article that stated that the game and parks commission is actually considering dropping Nebraskaland. This is one of the greatest Nebraska magazines. I lived for this magazine while I was deployed it was one of my greatest connections back to Nebraska outdoors. Everyone that saw it loved to read it; most outdoorsmen from other states praised Nebraska game and parks for such a great product.
Have to admit my subscription laps after having kids; but today I just renewed. If you are like me re-subscribed today; let’s keep this great Nebraska tradition going.

Hello All!

Hello All!

My brother-in-law and I hunted the sandhills area SW of Valentine two years and did harvest a couple of deer on our last day there, but the public areas were very small except for the National Forest area which was over run with ATV tracks. (Not sure how the classification of forest came about on that area though?)

So we are thinking about giving it another try and are now looking to the area around Chadron and Crawford. There seems to be a lot of public acess land to hunt and from looking at Google Earth it seems to be fairly rugged, larger areas with no road access and has lots of trees.

Now with that, here are a few questions:

1) Can we expect a lot of hunting pressure?
2) Are there a lot of road hunters in this area?
3) If a person hikes in away from the roads will we find ATV tracks all over like what we found in the Sandhills Unit?
4) If a person hunts hard enough does this unit have the potential for nice bucks, either whitetail or mule deer?
5) Do the state park areas require special permits to gain access?

Sorry for all the questions but it is a little ways to drive to get there and want to at least enjoy ourselves. A little info about us, he is 44 and I am 48, avid outdoorsman, not afraid to make day hikes in and pack animals out, don't shoot deer just for the sake of shooting something, we prefer to harvest mature deer, we have our own little track of woods here in ND and harvest does for meat and only shoot bucks if they are of good quality. In our area a 140+ Whitetail is a good one and a 155-160+ mule deer is a good one. Our main hunting method is to hike in, in the dark and spend alot of time behind the glasses hoping to spot a decent buck and than spend our time working in for a shot. We like to video our hunts if possible. Basically I guess we are just looking for a decent place to hunt and have an enjoyable time.

We are looking at hunting the first week of the ND season and than come down two days prior to the Nebraska opener, hunt for three days and head home for the last 5 days of the ND season.

Any help would be appreciated!

So I have been having some really nice bucks showing up at a location that does not permit the use of a treestand. I am trying to figure out how I am going to hunt these deer and think I need some help. I was thinking of going with a ground blind but think it is to late in the season to set one up without possibly changing the deers patterns.

The deer are constantly coming to the end of some plum brush where a cornfield meets a bean field. The beans in the bean field are very tall this year so I was thinking of just sitting down in the beans about 25 to 30 yards away and trying to shoot one from the ground. I figure I can sit low and still and when the deer arrive just wait for the perfect time to draw then smack it. Has anyone ever done this with success or am I just dreaming here.

I got a new cuddyback capture flash this last winter and really did not use it too much last year. Early spring I was thinking it was way better than my Moultrie's I used in the past. It took great pictures and 99.5% of the pictures had an animal in them. The last two times I checked it, there were lots of no animal pics. This last time it filled my 2 gig card about 4200 pics in 2 weeks. Maybe 100 of them had animals in them. I've used game cameras for years and know about moving weeds, sun etc. I brought it home to do some testing, pointed it at my house with no movable trees infront of it. I only had a chance to test at night. It would not trigger unless I walked infront of it. I waved a pine tree branch in front of it and it would not trigger. I would say most of my false triggers were during the day. I left it setup over night in the back yard and it only took a couple more pics during the night. I set it up facing away from the sun and as soon as it started getting light the thing started taking pics like crazy again. I could only see a few that had birds in them. I think it took about 120 pics fromt the time the sun started coming up till about 10:30, then not another pic till I walked up to get it after work. Seems to me that the air temp warming up is triggering it?? Anyone else have a similar experience like this with CB capture?
thanks in advance for any input.
