Good Gar Weather

The hottest summer days bring the gar topwater, and the clearer water makes them more visible. Now is the prime time to shoot gar if that's what you want to do, and it IS what I want to do. Yesterday I decided to spend a morning perched at a deep, whirling hole in the creek that always looked garry. It is somewhat an investment in time and exertion to get to. At 7:30 the first thing to swim past was a 22 pound grass carp, which got harvested. In a normal year on the creek - and I bowfish it heavily - I see maybe two longnosed gar and jillions of shortnosed. When I left at noon, I had seen six longnosers and nailed two of them. Three of these were in the 42-45 inch class and one brute was in the 52 inch class. I got off a hurried shot and barely missed him. I got a small 30 incher mistaken for a shortnosed and a 41 inch five pound longnosed. All in all, I saw six species of fish and one unidentified, an adventure well worth the long walk/wade in.

Sounds like fun. I shot at a jillion 6-8 inchers this weekend When the Paddles would stop jumpin. Those are some nice Gar you shot would be nice to shoot a Gar that big someday.
