Need to get this non-profit stuff set up. I was at the bank here in Omaha and the PBR said I needed a letter stating we were non-profit and a FID#. Anyone a laywer? Seriously though, from all this reading I think we can put it together as "a group of friends coming together" without having to go through all the technical aspects that bigger, more advanced non-profs have. I just need to figure out how to do that.

For the Fed ID#, go to Internal Revenue Service and on the home page is a section of most requested forms. one is Form SS-4, use this to apply for your federal id#.

The association probably needs to incorporate for liability reasons. Otherwise, I believe that each member could be individually liable for the actions of the association, I think, but could be wrong. I would think that the assistance of an attorney would be well worth it. I could assist on the books and record keeping side even though I don't do any nonprofit work. It shouldn't be to complicated.

You are correct, the organization will need to incorporate.
