Default Losing velvet..

It's about game time....buddy glassed a couple bucks the other night both sportin the white tines. Fuzz is starting to disappear, you know it's gettin close now.

Depends on the year but usually after the 1st, I don't see any with furry antlers. Heard of a few rare occasions on the opener when someone has an encounter with a velvet buck but those are few and far between. Have hunted Wyoming on the 1st and had multiple bucks in velvet. Stalked one the next morning and his antlers were orange.....it happens that fast.

I have a small forky on video cleaning the velvet off his horns and then eating it. This was on opening day of bow season probably 10 yrs ago. That has been the only time I have seen any fur on the horns during season.

last year seemed late to me. out of 15 different bucks i saw on opening day...8 were in velvet. had shots on 4 or 5, but they just werent the calibre of deer i wanted..too bad, that would have been awesome.

my girlfriend was in a tree about 200 yards away and she also saw a few sportin full velvet.

Here are a few from about the middle of the month that are still wearing. I have not got the cam since the 15th. I will pick it up friday and we will see if they are still wearing anything.

I have seen several bucks in the last few days(15+) and all still had velvet on. I would love to kill a buck still in velvet, what cool mount that would be! I'm sure, however, it will be gone by the 15th. Good luck to all this fall. Brett

I got my first wife into bowhunting and had her in a field edge ladder stand to hopefully take a Doe on the opener, she was due to give birth to our daughter in 10 days. I was in the same tree with a video camera.

Sure as crap, a group of 4 bucks were headed right for us, all were in the 130-145 range, and ALL were in velvet. The wind switched when they were about 25 yards out, she didnt get a shot...they were DEAD if I was shootin. If that wasnt enough, not 2 minutes later another buck came, 120 class, and still in velvet. The wind switched back in our favor, and he passed broadside at 10 yards...and kept going. She got buck fever so bad she didnt even attempt to draw.

Thats the closest I have ever come to taking a velvet buck, other than stupid little 3x3's.

I saw a 2 yr. old 4x4 yesterday with velvet hanging off. I have never seen a deer in velvet after the archery opener on the Niobrara with exception of a stag. My buddy and I had a group of 4 with velvet come by us on the North Loup River archery hunting many years ago but that's been it.

Picked up the trail cam last night. I have most of the deer shedding their summer coats....I think the coat change is happening right now and along with that the velvet should be coming off as well.

saw this guy out hitting the beans last evening when I put a camera out. Youll have to take my word for it because the pics are just with my digital camera at about 200 yards, but through the binos I could see he was clearly fully out of velvet. Nice solid 5x5...good tines, decent width....getting me pumped!

I think you can kinda see it in the pics though....his horns look clean and actually kinda shiny in the sunlight

Looks like a nice one to me. If he was in velvet his horns would look much darker, he is clean!
