he's right. its 60 and 60 for both hunts. i accidentally bought 2 of the boyer late tags...blame it on the goofy system, so i got the 2nd one via mail. i gotta kill 4 deer that weekend.

I didn't get a tag this year because all of the hunts are muzzleloader only. When the FWS decides to allow the use of shotguns, then I'll get a tag. Hunting switchgrass fields with a single shot muzzleloader would probably be a bit frustrating. Shotgun slugs, especially in an automatic shotgun, are ideal for that place. I have been very sucessful there in the past when shotguns were allowed.

This man speaks the truth. Last time I was there, we had to walk the feilds to get anything up...single shot sucks. Shotgun made it more bareable.

Sometimes I wonder about the FWS. They obviously want more deer killed there because they increased the permit numbers from 40 per hunt to 60 per hunt. Despite this, they still only allow the use of muzzleloaders. Despite all of the deer running aroud that place, the sucess rate is pretty low. If shotguns were allowed, I'm positive the rate would increase substantially. I'm sure they site safety as the reason for muzzleloaders only. However, it shows what little they know. Shotgun slugs are bigger and slower then muzzleloader projectiles and don't have near the range. Past 100 yds, shotgun slugs drop like a rock. Most modern muzzleloaders can shoot twice far as shotguns. Even the best rifled shotgun barrel with the most expensive sabot ammo will at best equal, what a muzzleloader can do and there aren't very many people willing to shell out $15 a box or more for that stuff. And then there's the issue of fairness. Boyer Chute and Desoto Bend is essentially public land that EVERYONE should get a chance to hunt, not just those who shoot muzzleloaders. I just don't get those guys(The FWS) I think I'm going write some congressmen and complain. It probably won't do any good but what the hell, it's something to do until hunting season gets here.

i like the way they do things there. keeps the people who really don't think its a good hunt away from me. i've walked with a single shot ML and the deer gets up and then falls down. i don't hit everytime but is it that ethical to pump 5-6 slugs at a deer just to mow one down? Me, i'll stick with the sit and wait approach that got me 2 deer in 30 min last year. the less that come out the better for me.

| There is nothing unethical abouting taking a follow up shot or two at a deer if the first round doesn't hit. As long as the deer is within a reasonable range and it presents a vital area shot. If it was, we would all be required to hunt with single shot rifles and shotguns. Also, in my experience hunting that place, siting and waiting doesn't work real well unless someone is walking in the grass pushing up all of the deer that are lying down hiding waiting for all of the hunters to leave the island. | +1 Sometimes, 1 shot doesn't kill the deer. |
