Before selecting to have a guide, I would look at success rates with or without a guide; most places have these stats.
Another thing to consider is the terrain you are in, one can get lost real easy if unfamiliar with the landscape, especially in the dark. The guide knows the ins & outs, nearby roads, and alot of big game guides are trained in first aid- a necessity in bear country. I don't look at the guide's only purpose is to put me on a trophy; it makes the hunt more enjoyable knowing you have someone that knows all aspects of the ground.
Stalking a mulie in Wyoming one time, a T-Storm with hail blew in within minutes and made finding the truck real difficult- took over an hour; equipment and gear was completely drenched. Never thought I needed a guide either but let me tell ya, that made me think a little.
